It generally takes around 8 hours to charge an EV from a normal house plug (240v). This makes it easy to charge your car overnight and make sure it will be ready to go every morning. The larger your battery and the slower the charging point, the longer it will take to fully charge so it can vary in different situations. There are many new options for faster charging stations which can now result in charges as fast as 20 minutes! These are usually used in public places or for businesses. This is always going to vary depending on the specific car. For example, many new EVs have a range of over 300kms per charge (such as the 2018 Nissan LEAF). Some of the Tesla Model S vehicles have a range of 500kms on one charge. Tesla's recently unveiled Roadster V2 (in production this year) will have a range of 1000kms per charge - much further than the average petrol car.

Running an electric vehicle can actually be much cheaper than a petrol or diesel car. If petrol costs $1.40 per litre, then the average cost of travelling 100kms in a petrol car will be about $19. For diesel vehicles, the cost to travel 100km would be around $8. The cost for electric charge is around $0.25 per kilo Watt per hour (kWh) and it takes around 18 kWh to travel 100kms. This means that the cost to drive an electric vehicle $4.50 per 100km.

There are many benefits to owning an electric vehicle! In addition to the lower running costs, it is also cheaper to maintain an EV. There is not much servicing that an electric vehicle requires as there are less moving parts in the car engine. Most EV batteries are under warranty for 8 years. Other than that the only maintenance is brakes, suspension and tyres.

Electric vehicles are beneficial for the environment in comparision to petrol or diesel cars. By choosing to drive an EV you are reducing pollution and many EVs are also built much from eco-friendly materials such as recycled water bottles, plastic bags, old car parts and more.

There are also health and safety benefits to driving EVs! Reducing exhaust emissions is important for our health. Better air quality results in less harmful toxins being inhaled into our lungs. EVs also tend to have lower risk for fires or explosions, are better built for safety in collisions, and even have a lower centre of gravity resulting in less chance of the car rolling over.

According to the US Department of Energy if electricity costs $0.11 per kWh and the vehicle consumes 34 kWh to travel 100 miles, the cost per mile is about $0.04. If electricity costs $0.11 per kilowatt-hour, charging an EV with a 70-mile range (assuming a fully depleted 24 kWh battery) will cost about $2.64 to reach a full charge.
